Copycat Egg McMuffin

A warm, savory breakfast sandwich with folded eggs, Canadian bacon, melted American cheese, and buttery toasted English muffins.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Servings: 2 sandwiches
Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 2 English muffins – The base of the sandwich toasted until lightly golden.
  • 2 large eggs – Create a soft tender, folded egg center.
  • 2 slices Canadian bacon – Adds savory flavor and lean breakfast protein.
  • 2 slices American cheese – Melts smoothly for a creamy mild cheese layer.
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter – Adds buttery flavor and helps give the muffins golden edges.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt – Enhances the natural flavor of the eggs.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper – Adds a gentle touch of seasoning.
  • 1 tablespoon water – Helps steam the eggs keeping them soft and tender.

Method

  1. Toast the English muffins. Split the muffins and toast them until golden. Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of butter evenly over the cut sides.
  2. Warm the Canadian bacon. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Warm the Canadian bacon slices for about 1 minute per side, then set them aside.
  3. Cook the folded eggs. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Lightly grease the skillet if needed. Crack one egg into a small bowl, season with a pinch of salt and pepper, then pour it into a 4-inch ring mold or use the skillet directly.
  4. Steam the egg. Add 1 tablespoon of water to the skillet, away from the egg, and cover immediately. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the white is set and the yolk is cooked through. Repeat with the second egg.
  5. Melt the cheese. Place one slice of American cheese on each warm egg during the final 30 seconds of cooking, covering the pan briefly so it melts.
  6. Assemble the sandwiches. Layer the bottom muffin with Canadian bacon, folded egg with melted cheese, and the top muffin. Serve warm.

Notes

For the closest McDonald’s-style texture, use a round egg ring and cook the eggs slowly with the lid on. If you do not have Canadian bacon, thin slices of ham work well, though the flavor will be slightly different. To make the sandwich ahead, wrap each cooled sandwich in foil and refrigerate for up to 2 days; reheat in a toaster oven or air fryer until warmed through.
